UL Listing

United Listings are a US private entity that certifies various products for safety.  They certify solar panels and in the past this certification # was UL- 1703. In Europe, they have a similar entity called CE.  Recently (dont know exactly when) UL and CE came together to standardize their certification process and the new UL listing recognized internationally is now UL-61730.  This is important since clients that want grid tied systems will have the additional requirement that the utility company approve the solar panels and they require UL listing of the panels. Not all of our panels are UL listed so they can’t be used for grid tied systems.  I just received over 600 new Waaree 390w panels that have this UL-61730 listing.

Why do we measure Voc and not VMP?

When we say we “test” all of our panels, we mean we test the output of the individual panels by themselves, without anything attached to them—that is, without a “load” (e.g., not connected to an inverter, charge controller, batteries, etc.). These external components are all considered “loads.” Testing panels without a load is the standard practice in the solar industry to determine whether a panel is functioning properly. This testing involves two measurements: voltage and current.

For voltage, we measure Voc (open circuit voltage). For current, we measure Isc (short circuit current, where current = amperage). At OGG, we typically skip Isc testing—not for any specific reason other than assuming that if the Voc is good, the Isc will most likely also be good (though I could be wrong about this assumption!). We may include Isc testing in the future.

Today, we encountered a situation where a customer insisted that one of our panels was “bad” because he connected it to a load and relied on the Vmp (voltage at maximum power), rather than the Voc, to assess its condition. Vmp is the voltage measured under load. The customer, who claimed to be a retired licensed electrician, argued the panel was faulty. I strongly disagree with this assessment.

The problem with his argument is that faults between the panel and other components, such as the inverter, battery, or charge controller, can cause low readings even if the panel itself is functioning properly (e.g., if the Voc is above 90%). It’s important not to fall into this misconception.

About a year ago, I sold a panel at a steep discount because a buyer made this same argument, and at the time, I didn’t know any better. Now I do.

 “black on black” panels

These are panels that are all black usually found in new construction installs.  I will guess that 100% of all new installs want these claiming that they are more “aesthetic.”   The aluminium frame is anodized black, the panel itself doesn’t have the white stripes or the white triangles. The cells are black.

 Iq&7 versus Iq8

I’m getting more and more buyers wanting to know if we have microinverters.  We don’t so I’ve been studying this subject and considering buying some to see if we can make money reselling them. In the meantime, here is a brief summary of what they are:
They are inverters but instead of a “string inverter” – ie the typical wall mount inverter, these are small inverters that are attached to the backside of each panel, and the primary purpose / advantage of these are that unlike a string inverter set up, where if shading occurs on one the the panels, the system could be compromise and all the panels could shut down, microinverters basically shut off only that panel that and the rest continue to work.
They also optimize energy production and enable panel-level monitoring.
Iq7 and Iq8 are both made by Enphase (there may be some indication Enphase may have merged or is working with Sunpower because I have seen articles where these may also be made by Sunpower, but I will study this more and send an update). IQ7 is the older inverter and is designed primarily for grid-tied solar installations. On the other hand, the IQ8 microinverter, the latest ones, offers grid-independent backup power.

looks exactly like the Iq8 but different label and location of label.

Solar News

We keep you up to date with all the best newest and latest and all the latest and greatest. Sometimes its the oldest equipment that lasts the longest. Why is that? It’s not about when you built it, but that the company that made it had standards that live up to our guidelines. We only choose to deal with the best solar panel distributors, who offer the best price.

Understanding Microinverters and Power Optimizers

Microinverters and power optimizers are two options for solar panel and sensor setups, and they work in unique ways: Microinverters manage each solar panel or sensor individually to maximize efficiency. They are more expensive and take more effort to install. Power...
